Wyss Geneva

Scientist in Computational Neuromodulation

Job description

The Wyss Center is seeking a Scientist in Computational Neuromodulation to develop the imaging, modeling and targeting methods that underpin non-invasive neuromodulation therapies. The position is part of a collaboration with Prisma Neurotech, a young startup in the neurotech domain, with the goal of adapting brain circuit targeting methods developed for deep brain stimulation (DBS) to non-invasive neuromodulation. The main focus is low-intensity transcranial focused ultrasound (LIFUS), but the methods also extend to other non-invasive techniques such as TMS, tDCS, tACS and tES. One concrete goal of the collaboration is to develop the resulting targeting and planning software into a medical device product (software as a medical device). The position reports to the Head of AI and Therapeutic Neurotechnologies from Wyss Center.

In their position, the Scientist in Computational Neuromodulation has a broad set of responsibilities, including:

  • Gap Analysis and Development Strategy: Perform a gap analysis of the technical, scientific, clinical, software, data, quality-management and implementation requirements for extending the existing technology to non-invasive neuromodulation, including the review of existing assets, workflows, technical capabilities, clinical needs, data and user requirements, software dependencies and limitations of the current approach. On this basis, contribute to the joint development strategy: the selection of the initial neuromodulation modality, the definition of the prototype functionality, and the technical and clinical milestones.
  • Image-Guided Targeting and Treatment Planning: Build and maintain per-subject pipelines that go from MRI and CT data to a treatment plan. This includes segmentation of skull, scalp and brain tissue, registration to standard spaces and atlases, co-registration of the transducer or coil position, estimation of the acoustic or electric field at the target, and derivation of dose and safety metrics. Produce outputs that can be used directly for neuronavigation and session planning, and document their accuracy and limitations.
  • Individualized Neuromodulation Targets: Develop and validate methods that define subject-specific targets. Combine structural and functional imaging, tractography and functional connectivity, normative connectomes and atlases, electrophysiology and clinical response data to estimate where stimulation is most likely to produce the intended effect, drawing on established DBS targeting approaches such as those in Lead-DBS where they transfer to non-invasive use. Quantify the uncertainty of each target, test the methods against outcome data where available, and make the reasoning behind each target traceable.
  • Simulation and Modeling: Set up, run and validate acoustic and thermal simulations of transcranial ultrasound (for example with BabelBrain, k-Wave, or Sim4Life), and electric field simulations for TMS and tES (for example with SimNIBS). Compare simulation results with phantom measurements, published benchmarks and in vivo data where possible, and keep a record of model assumptions and validation results.
  • Software Development and Medical Device Readiness: Turn the models and targeting methods into a prototype application together with the Prisma Neurotech team and review it with clinical and scientific users. Put this software on track for development into a medical device within the Wyss Center's ISO 13485 certified quality management system (IEC 62304, ISO 14971). Deploy pipelines on the Center's AI Ready Brain Data (AIR.BD) infrastructure so that results can be reproduced.
  • Support of Experimental and Clinical Studies: Contribute to the design of neuromodulation studies with clinical and academic partners, provide targeting and planning outputs for stimulation sessions, and help interpret the resulting imaging, physiological and behavioural data. Feed what is learned in the studies back into the models and targeting methods.
  • Team Interaction and Collaborative Working: Work as an integrated member of the AI Innovation and Therapeutic Neurotechnology team. Represent the modeling work in joint project meetings with Prisma Neurotech and prepare material for milestone reviews with the Wyss Center leadership.
  • Scientific Dissemination: Publish results in peer-reviewed journals, present them at scientific conferences, and contribute to grant and project proposals.

Profile required

  • A PhD in biomedical engineering, physics, neuroscience, computer science or a comparable quantitative discipline.
  • Knowledge of the computational aspects (for example modeling, imaging, targeting) of focused ultrasound, or of other non-invasive neuromodulation techniques, including practical experience with MRI and CT data (segmentation, registration, atlas-based analysis). Experience with connectomics or electrophysiological data is an advantage.
  • Proficient in programming, with working habits that include version control with git, automated testing and containerised environments. Experience with tools such as BabelBrain, k-Wave, SimNIBS or Lead-DBS is an advantage.
  • A track record of delivered, documented and reproducible work, such as peer-reviewed publications or released software, experience in evaluating existing software or clinical workflows and turning the findings into requirements, and the ability to work independently while contributing effectively to a multidisciplinary team of clinicians, engineers and researchers.
  • Experience with software development in a regulated environment (for example medical device software under IEC 62304, design controls, verification and validation, risk management) is an advantage.
  • Fluency in oral and written English is a must, French is a plus.
