Who we are :
Mantle8 is a cleantech start-up exploring natural hydrogen — we combine cutting-edge technology with geological strategy to locate reservoirs with high pressure, high purity, and multi-megaton scale. We're backed by leading clean-tech investors, including Breakthrough Energy Ventures and Kiko Ventures, and we just closed our Series A. We're entering a defining phase with FLOW, our most ambitious exploration campaign to date, across multiple geographies with leading industrial partners.
The role :
As IP Counsel, you'll join Mantle8 to run the day-to-day of our IP strategy, based in Grenoble and reporting directly to the CTO. You won't be starting from a blank page: we already work with two external partners, KNS (patent drafting and filing, follow-up on legal actions) and IPCG (IP strategy advisory), whom you'll coordinate and keep moving day to day rather than rebuilding everything from scratch. You'll also be in regular contact with our geoscience and engineering teams, in particular to raise awareness and provide training on IP best practices.
What you'll be doing :
- Track the evolution of filed/published patents (amendments, abandonments, competitor patents to watch).
- Meet regularly with the CTO and technical teams to identify what's patentable or better suited to trade secret protection.
- Prepare patent drafts and go back and forth with KNS through to filing.
- Implement internally the strategy and guidance defined with IPCG.
- Act as the single point of contact between the company and our two external partners.
- Raise awareness and train technical teams on IP best practices.
- Contribute, over time, technical development ideas (particularly around hardware/sensors) thanks to your understanding of the company's tech stack.
What we're looking for :
- Engineering or scientific background (geoscience is a plus, but not required).
- A first experience in intellectual property (2-5 years): patent drafting, portfolio management, or a similar role. A patent attorney qualification (CEIPI, EPA, CPI) is a plus, but not required — we rely on external firms for filings.
- Comfortable collaborating with external partners and growing a function alongside the company, rather than coming in with a director-level posture.
- Fluent French, good level of English.
