Do you think this could be you? To pursue our ambitious vision, we are looking for a Senior Materials & Composites Engineer. In this position, you will own the materials and composite laminate architecture of core subsystems of our next-generation ultra-light deployable structures, from concept through qualification all the way to volume production, and help shape a growing engineering team alongside former SpaceX engineers.
Your mission will be to:
- Design, develop and qualify composite laminates, adhesive bonds, and material systems for extremely lightweight deployable structures, taking end-to-end ownership of material selection and process definition
- Drive material and process trades and analyses (cure kinetics, resin-fiber interaction, CTE, outgassing, degradation in orbital environments) from early concept through detailed design and test
- Get hands-on with hardware for coupon testing, layup and cure trials, lamination process development, and production scale-up
- Build robust, flight-proven material solutions that meet aggressive mass and performance targets in demanding launch and orbital environments
- Define and execute material and process verification and validation strategies for your subsystems
- Mentor junior engineers and serve as a technical reference for materials and composites practices
Profile required
- 5+ years of hands-on experience with composite materials and lamination processes in a technically demanding environment (aerospace, motorsport, or advanced manufacturing), with a real grounding in the underlying physics and chemistry — not limited to epoxy layup on racecar structures
- Multiple full development cycles under your belt: you have taken a material system or laminate architecture from blank sheet to a qualified, flying or fielded product more than once
- Deep expertise in composite mechanics, resin chemistry and cure behavior, fiber architecture, and failure modes in harsh environments
- Fluency with CAD (e.g. CATIA, Siemens NX) and composite/FEA analysis tools; comfort with hand calculations to sanity-check results
- Strong analytical skills, a proactive attitude, excellent interpersonal skills and unbounded curiosity
- Autonomy, and a willingness to be fully responsible for a significant part of the finished product
- A proven track record of delivering reliable composite systems for harsh environments
- A willingness to mentor juniors and provide technical leadership for materials and composites practices
- Professional level English — further languages welcome
