Job description
ATMOS Space Cargo is seeking a highly motivated Mechanical Engineer with strong expertise in CAD-based development, mechanical design, and hands-on experience in building aerospace-grade hardware. In this role, you will be responsible for the design, development, manufacturing, and testing. You will work on the lifecycle from concept to verification and contribute directly to the development of solutions for space logistics.
Key Responsibilities
- Develop and refine mechanical designs from concept through production, ensuring space-qualification requirements are met
- Create detailed 3D CAD models and technical drawings (preferably SolidWorks) for manufacturing and assembly processes
- Lead the mechanical design, analysis, and optimization of launcher structures, mechanisms, and interfaces for performance, durability, and mass efficiency
- Define materials, components, and manufacturing methods compliant with aerospace standards and environmental constraints
- Manage and support the end-to-end manufacturing process, including prototype builds, assembly, integration, and test campaigns
- Conduct and document mechanical, structural, and environmental testing (vibration, thermal cycling, fit checks)
- Collaborate closely with internal teams (systems, avionics, propulsion) to ensure seamless integration of mechanical subsystems
- Interface with suppliers and partners to clarify technical specifications and ensure component quality and compliance
- Continuously improve existing designs to enhance performance, reliability, manufacturability, and cost efficiency
- Ensure full traceability, documentation, and compliance with safety, aerospace, and certification requirements
Profile required
- Bachelor’s or Master’s degree in Mechanical Engineering, Aerospace Engineering, or related field
- 3+ years of experience in mechanical design, ideally in aerospace, aviation, defense, or high-performance industries
- Strong proficiency in CAD modeling and technical drawing (SolidWorks preferred)
- Hands-on experience with mechanical assembly, prototype development, and testing
- Solid understanding of mechanical structures, materials, and manufacturing technologies
- Experience designing hardware exposed to vibration, thermal loads, and harsh environments
- Ability to interpret requirements and convert them into robust mechanical designs
- Excellent written and spoken English and German
- Strong problem-solving mindset, ownership mentality, and ability to work in a fast-paced engineering environment
For this role, we can only consider applicants who already hold a valid right to work in the EU.
Company description
ATMOS was founded as a European company built on the values of freedom, democracy, equality, the rule of law, and human rights. We are committed to protect these values by making our technology available to others who share the same values, strengthening infrastructure and innovation for prosperity on Earth.
Our team is multinational and diverse, with offices in Lichtenau and Strasbourg. We work in a collegial, hands-on culture where people support each other, take ownership, and keep learning every day. Motivation for the mission comes first — building spacecraft is not a nine-to-five pursuit. We align the mission, the team, and the individual in mutual dependence. This principle shapes our work environment where exceptional people, as committed as they are competent, can grow and contribute to a mission that matters.
